KWC: Coal Terminal Lawsuit Filed Against the State ‘Troubling for Our Future’

Lighthouse Resources lawsuit to shed light on serious problem of politics trumping regulatory process in Washington

OLYMPIA — Keep Washington Competitive issued the following statement in response to a lawsuit filed today by Lighthouse Resources against the state for denying key permits needed to build an export terminal that would deliver coal to trading partners across the globe:

“It is not surprising, yet for those that care about the future of our state, it is concerning that Millennium Bulk Terminals had to file a federal lawsuit today challenging the severely broken nature of the state of Washington’s process for reviewing new infrastructure projects.

For more than five years, this company has worked closely with local and state authorities to meet and exceed Washington’s stringent environmental standards, and yet they’ve encountered nothing but roadblocks from decision makers. The sign this sends to the outside world is that Washington is not a place to invest or do business, and for a state whose economy is almost entirely tied to trade, that’s troubling for our future.”
